The Huskar Colliery Disaster killed 26 children in one mining disaster. The day the disaster occurred it was hot and sunny, but from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. a violent thunderstorm raged with about two to two and a half inches of rain fall.
The rain soon ran into the pit putting out the boiler fire that was used to take workers to the surface. A message was sent that all the miners should make their way to the pit bottom. However, the children who had already been working for nine hours became impatient and decided to make their way up the ventilation drift. They would head through the mine for the day hole, a drift entrance to the mine in Nabs Wood. They hurried through the pitch-blackness relying on their base instincts and local knowledge to navigate their way through the rough passages. As they were making their way up the drift, a stream, which had swollen into a rushing torrent by the downpour, overflowed into the drift.
The water rose against the door and twenty six children, age six to seventeen, were drowned.
